Around 270,000 people live in the "Marzahn-Hellersdorf" district in eastern Berlin - 4,722 of whom voted on the 183 proposals for the 2022/23 participatory budget by February 8. A total of 25 project ideas can be implemented; the annual budget is 200,000 euros.
The three ideas that most people voted for could not be more different: remembering the past, investing in the future.
Near Brodowiner Ring, on April 24, 1992, Vietnamese contract worker Nguyễn Văn Tú was stabbed to death by a sympathizer of the far-right "German People's Union" party. A new memorial plaque is now to replace the old one, which disappeared under unexplained circumstances, and not only commemorate this act but also serve as a memorial against xenophobia and right-wing extremism.
Second place went to the idea of a "Pupils' Budget for 2022 and 2023" and third place to the creative and learning workshop currently under construction at the Peter Pan Primary School.
